Local media reported that the Presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP), Gotabaya Rajapaksa (GR), would need to face a court hearing on Wednesday (2nd October), ahead of the deadline for nominations on the 7th regarding his identity documents. The Court of Appeal entertained a petition questioning the citizenship and the legality of his identity documents. GR’s dual citizenship has been a controversial topic throughout the campaign. However, the latest petition alleges that his Sri Lankan identity documents were obtained without proper legal documents.

We believe this further increases the uncertainty regarding GR’s candidature. If the court rules in favour of the petitioners, he would need to withdraw from the election as a candidate. This removes one of the two leading candidates (the other being Sajith Premadasa from the UNP) from the race. There is wide speculation on who would succeed GR in case he is not qualified to run from SLPP, but nothing has been confirmed as yet. The decision is expected by Friday (4th October), and we believe this will lead to higher volatility in the markets for the rest of the week.
