Ending months of speculation, the United National Party (UNP) nominated deputy leader of the Party, Sajith Premadasa as the presidential candidate yesterday. This followed the working committee meeting, where Premadasa’s nomination was approved. Meanwhile, Wickramasinghe retained his position as party leader.

Premadasa will contest the election from a broader political party, The United National Front (UNF), which will be led by the UNP. The UNF currently comprises: 1) the Jathika Hela Urumaya, 2) the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, 3) the All Ceylon Makkal Congress, 4) the National Union of Workers, 5) the United Left Front and 6) the Democratic People’s Front. Notably, the Tamil National Alliance, which endorsed President Sirisena towards the latter part of the 2015 election campaign, is yet to announce its stance for the current elections.

In terms of the rural voter base, while Premadasa has a better footing compared with Wickramasinghe, and we expect there to be heightened competition against Rajapaksa for the rural vote.
