QATAR: GCC split is about regional risk, not Qatar alone

    Root causes of the rift – The causes of this rift are: (1) Saudi and Abu Dhabi alignment on a foreign policy based on countering the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), Iran and Daesh; (2) emboldening of this policy following support of the US administration under President Trump; and (3) Qatar’s contrary policies on the MB and, to a lesser degree, Iran. These now matter more than the chronology of the Arab Islamic American Summit, the hacking or not of the Qatar state news agency, the phone call between the leaders of Qatar and Iran, Saudi and UAE-based media criticism of Qatar, Qatar-based media coverage of the alleged hacking of a UAE diplomat’s email.
