According to a newspaper article yesterday, Nigeria’s Ministry of Finance indicated that it had advised the President on new excise tariffs for alcohol and cigarettes. The proposed excise tariffs are as follows: (1) beer – NGN35/litre; (2) wines – NGN150/litre; (3) spirits – NGN200/litre; and (4) cigarettes - 20% of production costs and a specific NGN1/ stick rate. Note that the previous excise tariff was an ad valorem rate of 20% of production costs.
