Bangladesh’s mobile money race could be about to get more interesting. A news report suggests Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) may be allowed entry into Mobile Financial Services (MFS) if draft guidelines prepared by the central bank are passed. MNOs, along with NBFIs and investment/fintech firms, would be permitted to own a maximum 49% of an MFS platform, while a scheduled bank must own at least 51%. If passed, this guideline would potentially be negative for BRAC/bKash, positive for Grameenphone (Buy) and positive for other banks who could be potential partners for MNOs.
